Eat Healthier in Hong Kong: The One Habit that Changed my Life | 香港食得更健康:改變我一生的一個習慣

“You look so much slimmer!” “I can’t recognise you…” “What happened?”

Back in 2018, my body is breaking down… Overweight with gout flares, hypertension, and low energy. I remember asking my doctor, who wanted to prescribe pills to lower my blood pressure, “So… when can I get off these pills?” The doctor flatly said, “Never.”

What he said and not the medication he prescribed, is what I needed to kick off my transformation.

“你看起來瘦左好多!” “我認不出你了…” “發生咩事?”

早在 2018 年,我的身體就崩潰了……超重,痛風、高血壓和低能量。 我的醫生想給我開藥來降低血壓,我記得問過他 :「咁…我幾時可以停藥?」 醫生簡單回答:「開始左唔會停。」

他的回覆,而不是他開的藥,才是我開始轉變所需要的。

“I will track my weight by stepping on the scale every morning.”

I bought the Withings Body Cardio scale for my Christmas gift in 2017, and never looked back. For myself and the ones I love, I made a commitment that became a habit.

Since then, below is a picture of my weight in the last few years.

「我每天早上都會記錄我的體重。」

我在 2017 年作聖誕節為自己購買了 Withings Body Cardio 體重秤,而從此再也沒有回頭。 為了我自己和我愛的人,我做出了承諾,並成為了一種習慣。

從那以後,下面是我這幾年體重的照片。

So how did this simple habit make such an impact? Progress and Accountability.

Progress is the best motivator. Linking behaviours to my progress is key to this journey. What if I run instead of walk in my morning routine? What if I lower my carbohydrate intake during my lunch time? Every morning, a 0.5kg drop was a milestone to celebrate. Every milestone helps me gain confidence to aspire to the next.

The flip side of Progress was… Accountability. Say, witnessing a 2kg uplift in a few days, when I took a few cheat days after a stressful work week. Or, substituting my favourite lunch routine of Beetroot and Chickpea Salad with Yuzu dressing, with a side of Chicken and Avocado, with a Shake Shack burger with fries. The scale became my partner and my coach.

這個簡單的習慣怎樣產生如此大的影響的呢? 進步與責任。

進步是最好的動力。 將每天的努力與我的體重聯繫起來是旅程的關鍵。 如果我早上跑步而不是慢走會好點嗎? 如果我在午餐時間降低碳水化合物的攝入量會怎樣? 每天早上,體重下降 0.5 公斤都是值得慶祝的里程碑。 每一個里程碑都幫助我更有信心去繼續挑戰自己。

進步的另一面是……問責制。 比如說,緊張工作一周後,幾天的cheat days令我體重增加了 2 公斤。 或者,Shake Shack 漢堡和薯條代替我最喜歡的紅菜頭鷹嘴豆沙律(配柚子醬及加雞肉和牛油果)。 體重秤成了我的伙伴和教練。

In the past 3 years, without medication, I was able to lower my blood pressure. I hope this inspires everyone to do the same, to motivate ourself to eat and live healthier with a simple habit!

在過去的 3 年裡,在不服藥的情況下,我的血壓開始正常化。 我希望這能激勵每個人都這樣做,通過一個簡單的習慣來激勵自己吃得更健康,生活得更健康!
